Board of Directors Update: October 2015

EC3’s Board of Directors convened on October 20th for its first meeting of the new fiscal year. The first major topic was the ratification of new Board officers: Steve Purchase is the Chair; Lauren Gewirtz is the Vice-Chair; Cameron Cichocki is the Treasurer; and Stephanie Winslow is the Secretary. Board officers serve for one-year terms that correspond to the fiscal year (October – September).

The second major topic of discussion was the “Board Challenge” fundraiser targeted toward EC3 alumni (not currently-enrolled families). The Board Challenge began three years ago, during a time of significant financial need, when Executive Director Lis Weston playfully made a bet with the Board that she could raise more money alone than they could raise collectively. Since then, the Challenge has been adopted and refined as part of EC3’s year-end strategy to bring in general-fund donation dollars. This year’s challenge seeks to raise $20,000 from alumni during the next three-week period.

The complete minutes from all Board meetings can be found on EC3’s website ( The Board meets monthly, on the third Tuesday, at 6:15 p.m. in EC3’s gym. These meetings are open to all, and those who are considering applying to serve on the Board are encouraged to attend at least one meeting as a visitor. A list of current Board members can be found here:

School Selection Expo

EC3 is hosting a School Selection Expo on Thursday, November 12th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity for families to educate themselves about the different school options in the area for kindergarten and beyond. We will host representatives from Cole Charter Academy, Lansing Charter Academy, Lansing Public Schools, Montessori Children’s House, St. Gerard, St. Thomas Aquinas, Stepping Stones Montessori, and Windemere Park Charter Academy. Each school will have a booth with information and a representative to answer your questions. This event is open to all families, not just those who have kids starting kindergarten next fall. Please RSVP at

Second-Wednesday Mom’s Lunch

Admit it, Moms: sometimes it would be nice to spend an hour with other moms when the kids are NOT around so you can share stories, laughter, and advice. So bring your lunch to EC3 on the second Wednesday of each month and do it! This informal group has no agenda; rather, it’s an opportunity to gather for random chat and get-to-know-ya time! Be warned: with a population such as this, there's a high probability the word "poop" could be uttered while you eat your sandwich. But if you're not squeamish, please join us at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. RSVP at

Breakfast with Santa

Saturday, November 21st and Sunday, November 22nd
Believe it or not, the Christmas season will soon be upon us. What better way to kick off the holiday season than enjoying breakfast with Santa! Bring your children for a hot pancake breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus at Troppo. The morning includes cookie decorating, writing letters to Santa and holiday arts and crafts. Reserved seating for dining will be from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 pm. For reservations call Troppo at 517-371-4000.

Preschoolers' Habits: Handle With Care

Many preschool children go through a period of various self-comforting habits such as hair- pulling, rocking, or biting their nails and the skin around them. As if they were exploring the behavior that bothers parents, they seem to run the gamut of habits! Read more at the NAEYC for Families site at

Teething and Fever

Many parents have heard the term “teething fever,” or that teething babies often experience diarrhea or other symptoms of illness just before a new tooth arrives. The truth is, most experts will tell you that teething does not cause fever and definitely does not cause a high fever. It may cause a low-grade fever though, especially on the day that the tooth actually erupts, but when it doubt, don't blame your child's fever on teething, especially since it could be a coincidence and your child could be teething and have another illness causing the fever. In addition to a high fever, such as above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, teething is not usually thought to cause diarrhea, a decreased appetite for liquids, other types of rashes, or a cough.
