EC3 Volunteer Opportunities – Saturday, October 11th

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 11th, we will be tackling our next volunteer opportunity – painting the Ladybug room, and working outdoors for our annual fall yard work and cleanup. We need a group of volunteers to help with various stages of the jobs -- prep work, furniture moving, painting, and clean-up crews will all be needed inside. If painting isn’t your thing, grab a rake and some lawn bags and help us outside! Work will start at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 3:00 p.m. Please come lend a hand at any point during that time, even if just for an hour! Please sign-up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4aa5ab2ba7fc1-community – available slots range from one hour to all day and you can choose what you would like to help with.

We’re also happy to receive donations of gift cards to Home Depot for supplies, as well as donations for refreshments for the volunteers!

The Movers for Meals drive assists food-insecure individuals and families in the fall and winter. This year we are doing a Green vs. Blue theme – let’s see who can donate the most food – Spartan fans or Wolverine fans. Bring in a few cans of non-perishable items and drop them in the Green or Blue box in the front lobby!

Creative Ways to Celebrate a Birthday without Food!

As we approach the holiday treat season, celebrating birthdays in the classroom can start to feel like sugar overload! Check out this blog post (http://bit.ly/ZQ1amn) and our Pinterest page (http://bit.ly/1vNKV2u) for ideas on how to celebrate your child’s birthday in the classroom without food. Of course cupcakes and the other treats are always welcome if that is your preference!

Apple Butter Festival
Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The 41st annual Apple Butter Festival promises to excite the senses with the sights, sounds, and smells of autumn. Spend the day with us, surrounded by nature, while celebrating the harvest season and all its history, glory, and tradition. Produced in the fall as a means of preserving part of the apple crop, apple butter production was a community project that brought together generations of families and neighbors, young and old. Fenner’s Apple Butter Festival is truly a community event, with visitors trying their hand at heritage games, using a cross-cut saw, and even helping to stir the apple butter as it boils over the fire in a copper kettle. http://bit.ly/1xi5ju3

Color Cruise and Island Festival – Grand Ledge
Friday, October 10th through Sunday, October 12th
Take a trip down memory lane in an old-fashioned covered wagon or glide down the scenic Grand River on a riverboat. Pioneer demonstrations include black kettle caramel corn, folk music, fur traders, cider pressing, car show and more. http://bit.ly/1oKctSx

“The Snow Queen and the Goblin” and “The Emperor's New Clothes” – Schmidt Community Center
Friday, October 10th through Sunday, October 19th with shows at 7:00 p.m. on Fridays; shows Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 p.m.
The Snow Queen and the Goblin takes place in the chilly area between our normal world and the mystic realm of the Snow Queen. Children have sometimes disappeared from the village, after the mysterious Goblin has been seen. The Goblin is able to travel between two worlds, and take others with him. But although the Goblin describes the wonders of the Snow world and the Queen he serves, magical forces have long been changing the Snow realm into a place of darkness and despair.
The Emperor’s New Clothes is an entertaining, comic tale. This whimsical retelling of the classic story includes a moral that is well worth recounting: Do the opinions of the wise and learned always hold up to scrutiny? Or can people sometimes become fooled by their own cleverness?
Ticket prices are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages 12 and under. http://bit.ly/1CProDq
